TIMES names 'Best of 2008' winners

LEXINGTON, Ky.- Defending Horse of the Year Curlin and undefeated Zenyatta, North America ' s leading candidates for Horse of the Year honors in 2008, received overwhelming support from racing fans around the world and are among the prominent selections to receive year-end honors in the THOROUGHBRED TIMES " Best of 2008 " honorees. All of the "Best of 2008" selections are reported in THOROUGHBRED TIMES issue of December 27, 2008.
More than 3,000 votes were cast for the 25 different categories in the "Best of 2008," including at least one vote coming from all 50 states and votes from 28 different countries, including England and Australia. The 25 individual categories were paired with nine selections from THOROUGHBRED TIMES editors and writers for this year's "Best of 2008" package.
Curlin was selected by fans as the Best Horse of 2008 and his connections, trainer Steve Asmussen, and majority owner Jess Jackson, earned the fans' vote as Best Trainer and Best Owner, respectively.
Zenyatta took top honors or played a part in four different honors as fans recognized her for Best Accomplishment (her undefeated campaign), Best Synthetic Surface Horse, Best Grade 1 Breeders ' Cup race, and Best Victory by a Closer, in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic.
Other top names from the 2008 racing season to receive honors include jockey Garrett Gomez, the ill-fated Eight Belles, leading European three-year-old fillies Goldikova (Ire) and Zarkava, undefeated Peppers Pride, two-time Whitney Handicap winner Commentator, and Racing Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito.
