Tish Wilhite and Hes A Smokin Indian Win 2008 NRCHA Non Pro Two Rein World and National Championship

Tish Wilhite has become the first-ever National Reined Cow Horse Association Non Pro Two Rein World Champion, as 2008 was the first year for a world title in this class. She won the title on her horse, Hes A Smokin Indian, by Hickorys Indian Pep and out of Baroak Again.

"He's my absolute most favorite horse. He's special in so many ways," noted Wilhite. Hes A Smokin Indian, shortened to Indy, is a grandson of the mare that Wilhite learned to go down the fence on about 25 years ago, Smokealot.

For the 3-time NRCHA National Champion, the World Championship title was exciting. "It's my first World Championship, and actually, it's my first time to ever win a saddle, too." But along with the World title, Wilhite and Indy also secured the first-ever Non Pro Two Rein National Championship - the pair's second National title.

The Clovis, California, competitor had a few extra people in her cheering section - Glenn and Janet Rush from Nebraska, and Cecil and Eunice Banning from Kansas. The two couples happened to be sitting by Wilhite and her mother, Jo Wilhite, during the preliminary competition. "They had never been to an NRCHA competition, and saw the event coverage on the local station, and decided to come watch. After visiting with us, they decided to stay an extra week," Wilhite explained. "I didn't want to jinx it, but I told mom that if I won, they needed to be in our awards photo. I'm so glad they were there."

Along with a check for $2,387, Wilhite won a Bob's Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land and Cattle, a Gist Custom Buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, a pair of Rios of Mercedes stock boots, a commemorative World Finals vest from Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison Trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

The Non Pro Two Rein Reserve Championship went to Nelle Murphy and Just Rein Or Shine, owned by Don Murphy. Just Rein Or Shine is by the late sire, Smart Shiner, and out of Just Pebbles. Murphy took home a check for $1,432, a Gist Custom Buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, a set of Custom Spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, an ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, a commemorative World Finals vest from Gist Silversmiths, and a CR Morrison commemorative

medallion.

The NRCHA World Championship Show, presented by John Deere, is held at the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Spur Arena in San Angelo, Texas, as part of the Fort Dodge Animal Health NRCHA Celebration of Champions. The event, which runs through February 8, begins daily at 8am, with the exception of Sunday, February 8, when it will begin at 10am.
