Todd Bergen and Nics Black Diamond Win Preliminary Rein Work and Lead Open Composite

Todd Bergen and Nics Black Diamond didnít leave much to chance as they completed the second leg of preliminary competition at the 2008 National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby in Paso Robles, California. The pair earned a resounding approval from the judges, scoring a 225 to easily top the field of 101.

The strong performance, coupled with yesterdayís 218 score in the herd work, gives Nics Black Diamond a hefty lead in the preliminary round, with a total of 443 points. Trailing by five points for the composite is the preliminary herd work champion, Docs Soula, ridden by Doug Williamson.

Nics Black Diamond is a 4-year-old black stallion by Nic It In The Bud and out of Shinersdiamond Jackie by Shining Spark. He was bred and raised by owners Mark and Kelly Gowing of Lompoc, California. The talented horse has seen success in many aspects of competition, and made the finals at the National Stock Horse Association Open Futurity, the Snaffle Bit Futurity and the National Reining Horse Association Futurity.

Finishing second in the preliminary rein work was Wright On Ned, ridden by Ron Emmons. The horse by Lenas Wright On and out of Smart Sally is owned by Ronís wife, LaDona.

Mary Dosek and Colonels Cash Cow made the most of their opportunity to compete in all three divisions, topping the Intermediate and Limited Open rein work preliminary with a 219.5. Colonels Cash Cow is a 5-year-old gelding by The Nu Colonel and out of Peppy Leanna. She is owned by Tom and Judy Crawford of Santa Ynez, California.

Leading the composite after two rounds of competition in the Intermediate Open is Boolights Sun Dancer, ridden by Dee Craig. The 5-year-old roan mare, by Boonlight Dancer and out of Docs Hustlin Honey, is owned by Vicki Cantlon of Boise, Idaho.

Hip Addams, ridden by Sarah Winters and owned by Richard Winters of Ojai, California, is leading the Limited Open composite after the two preliminary rounds. The pair has a 421 composite going into the final leg of competition.
