Tommy Thompson and Famoso Starlight Mark High Score of 2008 Snaffle Bit Futurity Preliminary Cow Work

Winning a preliminary round of National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity competition is a lofty achievement, even for the most accomplished exhibitors. When Tommy Thompson and Famoso Starlight completed their cow work run, they not only earned an Open, Intermediate Open, and Limited Open Final’s berth – but also marked the Open Cow Work high score with a 219.

That means that at the Annual NRCHA Hall of Fame Banquet, Thompson will be awarded a Gist Silversmiths Gold Buckle, sponsored by Brian and Cynthia Holthouse/Wrights Quarter Horses, and a special Perpetual Mehl Lawson Bronze, from the Leavitt Family, in honor of Morey Leavitt. They also earned over $3,500 in go-round money.

Thompson and Famoso Starlight, owned by Lloyd Moore and Sylvia Riggs of Bakersfield, California, marked 213 in both the herd and rein work, before earning their 219 in the cow work. They ended the preliminaries at the top of both the Intermediate Open and Limited Open divisions.

The Snaffle Bit Futurity runs through October 5 at the Reno Livestock Events Center in Reno, Nevada.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association, the governing body of cow horse competition, is responsible for promoting the sport, insuring high standards of competition and educating members and the public about the history and tradition of the cow horse. Through the support of a Corporate Partner family that includes Adequan®, Wayne Hodges 4-Star Trailers and Outlaw Conversions, Bob's Custom Saddles, Cinch, Inc., Classic Equine, Gist Silversmiths, MD Barns, Platinum Performance, Inc., Nutrena, Quarter Horse News & Performance Horse magazine, the Peppermill Hotel/Resort, Fort Dodge West Nile Innovator, Rios of Mercedes, Merial products ULCERGARD and EQUIOXX, Great American Insurance Company and the Silver Legacy Hotel, the association works to keep the vaquero tradition alive in today’s equine industry.
