Bruce grew up on his family’s Nameless Valley Ranch in Leander, Texas—just north of Austin. There, he worked cattle and helped with the ranch’s horse breeding program. Bruce rode on his first overnight pack trip when he was only three months old. He started his own horse at age 8 (with Dad’s help of course). “I was the first one on that horse,” Bruce says. “I’ve been riding and loving it ever since.”
After working horses at the ranch, Bruce took off to conquer bull riding on the rodeo circuit. He rode for 10 years and traveled across the U.S. Bruce met his wife, Amanda, during his rodeo travels. Now, the couple lives together on their Iowa ranch with children Mikayla, Kaid, Cutter, and Brody—“Hopefully all future horse trainers,” Bruce says.
Bruce now focuses his cowboy talents on his 40 reined cow horse competition horses. He’s won multiple futurity and derby events. He holds 10-15 clinics each year for performance (reining, barrel racing and working cow horse) competitors across the country and at his Iowa-based Monty Bruce Training Center.
“We host beginning horsemanship clinics to advanced performance horse clinics,” Bruce explains. “This year we have an in depth Extreme Cow Horse Camp. Each camper will learn to judge the event and will leave with a video of their runs so they know what they need to look like.”
Bruce’s low-pressure style of training focuses on “teaching the horse, not forcing the horse.” Bruce teaches riders while incorporating motivational tips, theories, and goal setting techniques to help them accomplish the results they want while maintaining a long-lasting relationship.
