USET Foundation Names Charlie Jayne as 2006 Maxine Beard Award Winner

Gladstone, NJ – March 8, 2006 - The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is proud to announce that Charlie Jayne of Elgin, IL, is this year’s winner of the Maxine Beard Show Jumping Developing Rider Award. The USET Foundation awarded this rising young equestrian this honor because of his competitive records to date and because of his promise for the future.

The recipients of this award are chosen based on their potential to represent the United States in international competition. A Show Jumping Developing Rider is defined as a U.S. citizen who has not represented the United States in Olympic, Pan American, or World Championship competition. Alternates for the Olympic, Pan American, or World Equestrian Games, as well as riders who have competed in the Show Jumping World Cup Final, are still considered Show Jumping Developing Riders and are eligible for the award.

The Maxine Beard Award was established by friends of trainer Ronnie Beard in honor of Ronnie’s mother. It was developed to assist riders in their quest for equestrian excellence. Observing international competition is a crucial component in the education of an equestrian athlete.

Charlie Jayne began riding when he was three years old. He grew up on his parents’ farm in Elgin, IL, a suburb of Chicago, and trains with his father, Alex R. Jayne, who coached previous winner Cayce Harrison and top show jumper Chris Kappler when they were junior riders. Charlie’s interest turned to jumpers at the age of eight, when he began doing the Children’s Jumpers on Carmina and Cyrano, his “two fast speed horses.” Jayne won a Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) Circuit Championship in the Children’s Jumpers.

His move into the Junior Jumpers came with two outstanding horses, Show Me the Money and Cleopatra. Jayne showed in his first grand prix event, the Motor City Grand Prix in Detroit, MI, on Cleopatra at the tender age of eleven. That same year, he competed in the Lake Placid Grand Prix as well.

Since then, Jayne has competed in the Junior Jumpers and in grand prix events with such horses as Rock Candy and Champion. In 2005, he showed as an amateur with JF in the grand prix classes at WEF and won the $25,000 Grand Prix of Traverse City at the Horse Shows By the Bay and the Welcome Stake at the Circle City Equestrian 500 in Indianapolis.

Jayne has never represented the United States Equestrian Team, but he remarked, “It’s a big dream of mine that hopefully some day I’ll be able to compete on a Nations’ Cup team or show at the World Cup Finals.”

Alex Jayne commented, “I believe that he will be able to represent the United States one day. He is a hard worker and is a very talented rider, both of which are good ingredients to go far in this industry.”

“I think it’s a great honor to win this award,” said Jayne, “especially since Cayce Harrison and Kent Farrington have won it. If I could ride half as good as them some day, that’d be pretty nice.”

To further his education and experience in show jumping, Jayne began training with Norman Dello Joio last year at Spruce Meadows, and he co-trained with Dello Joio and his father at this year’s WEF.

“I think Charlie is extremely talented and is a very natural horseman,” Dello Joio expressed. “He is one of the really promising young riders in our sport in this country.”

As part of the award, Jayne will go to the 2006 FEI World Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of the U.S. delegation and will walk the course with U.S. Chef d’Equipe George H. Morris. “I think going to the World Cup Final will help me tremendously,” Jayne said. “Every time you watch the grand prix riders go around the course, you learn. I would love to watch riders like Ludger Beerbaum, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Rodrigo Pessoa, and support the riders from the U.S.”

Jayne is a sophomore at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, and plans to become a professional rider once he graduates.
