2007 USEF Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour Receives Funding From USET

Gladstone, NJ – May 3, 2007 – The USET Foundation is pleased to announce that this year it will fund the 2007 United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour, which is part of the long-term high performance strategy to develop the best possible United States’ equestrian teams for the future.

The funds for the 2007 USEF Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour were raised by the USET Foundation as part of its Campaign to Achieve Competitive Excellence, in addition to its generous commitment of $2.125 million to fund international High Performance equestrian sport this year. The Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour was funded through contributions from individuals who understand the value and importance of providing the international competition experience to the United States’ young talent.

Four riders will compete on this year’s Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour. They include: Eliza Shuford of Hickory, NC, and Georgina Bloomberg, Brianne Goutal, and Sarah Segal, all of New York City. Selection of the riders was based on the rider’s ranking on the USEF Computer List as of April 27, 2007. Bloomberg will act as a mentor for the other riders due to her international experience, which includes being a member of the winning team in the 2005 Samsung Super League event in La Baule, France.

The riders will compete at the CSI 3* in Pforzheim, Germany, on June 1-3, the CSIO 4* in Hamina, Finland, on June 15-17; and the CSIO 4* in Drammen, Norway, on June 21-24. The riders on the 2007 USEF Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour will be given a grant to help pay for the transportation of one horse per rider. The funding will also cover a team veterinarian, chef d’equipe and various expenses associated with competing abroad.

The chef d’equipe for the 2007 Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour is Olympic gold medal-winning show jumper Melanie Smith Taylor. She will be filling in the duties for U.S. Show Jumping chef d’equipe George H. Morris due to scheduling conflicts with the Samsung Super League Nations’ Cup Tour.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity,” Smith Taylor said. “I very much look forward to it. It’s my first experience as a chef d’equipe and with developing riders. It’s a great concept to give experience to any rider who wants a future in international competition. It’s so different to compete on a team under the American flag with the pressure of riding in a Nations’ Cup. This is the only way to really experience that for future teams.”

She added, “I hope to represent George to the best of my abilities and inspire the riders with team spirit and sportsmanship, to rise to the occasion and never give up; the types of things you look inside yourself to find when you ride at this high level. I hope to share my experiences and to be a mentor and role model.”

USET Foundation Executive Director, Bonnie B. Jenkins, stated, “One of the most important efforts of the USET Foundation is to help build for the future of our U.S. equestrian teams. Being able to fund a Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour is critical to that mission. We owe all the thanks to the generous donors who share our interest and are willing to help provide these international competitive experiences for our rising stars.”

Morris thanked the individuals who supported the Show Jumping Developing Young Rider Tour and the other High Performance programs because without their support, it would not have been possible.
