USET Foundation Trophy Awarded to Bouckaert Pollard

On October 16, 2005 Nathalie Bouckaert Pollard of Chatsworth, GA rode her 12-year-old English Thoroughbred gelding West Farthing to win the US Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation Challenge Trophy at the U.S. Equestrian Federation (USEF) Three-Star Eventing Championship at the 17th annual Fair Hill International Festival in the Country in Fair Hill, Maryland.

Bouckaert Pollard held the lead with her final score of 44.40 just in front of Will Faudree of Southern Pines, NC on Antigua and Robyn Fisher of West Hills, CA on Le Samurai, by less than one rail entering Sunday’s show jumping phase. Show jumping has been Bouckaert Pollard’s most difficult phase in past years, but training with US Eventing team show jumping coach Laura Kraut, a successful international show jumping competitor, seems to have helped get her on the right track.

Faudree had entered the final phase within a rail of the lead but after he had one rail down for four additional penalties, Bouckaert Pollard was able to ride with the confidence of having one in hand. That rail came in handy when West Farthing knocked down the back rail of the oxer at fence number 10, but the 25-year-old rider, who won individual Gold medals in the North American Young Riders’ Championships in 1997 and 1998, kept her cool and kicked on for the win.

“Every time I enter the show jumping ring I try to wipe out my past demons,” she said. “It’s never been my horse’s fault; he’s a good show jumper, it’s always been a problem of mine. Today I worked on being calm and maintaining a nice rhythm. Hopefully this will help me past the problem.”

Bouckaert Pollard, who is also training with team coach and six-time Olympian Robert Dover, said that she’s hoping to improve her dressage as well as her jumping. “It’d be nice to give myself a little more breathing room.”

The U.S. Equestrian Team Foundation Challenge Trophy dates back to 1963 and is officially named the United States Equestrian Team, Gladstone Three Day Challenge Trophy. A silver dish, it was originally awarded to the winner of the US Equestrian Team Fall CCI*** Championship. The USET Championship used to be held at Bruce Davidson’s Chesterland Farm in Unionville, PA but when that event was canceled the championships moved to Fair Hill. Having been awarded for various reasons over the years, the trophy is now awarded to the winner of the US Equestrian Federation Fall Three Day Event Championship.

The United States Equestrian Team Foundation (http://www.uset.org) is the non-profit organization that supports the competition, training, coaching, travel and educational needs of America’s elite an developing international, high-performance horses and athletes in partnership with the United States Equestrian Federation.
