Wellington, FL - November 20, 2007 - The 124th National Horse Show and Family Festival is pleased to announce that two-time vaulting World Champion Matthias Lang of France will perform in a demonstration with French vaulter Sarah d'Auriol. The first demonstration will take place on Friday, Dec. 7, at approximately 7 p.m. before the start of the "Jumping Under the Stars" gala. The second demonstration will be on Sunday, Dec. 9, at approximately 1:30 p.m. before the second phase of the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championships. Both demonstrations will be in the Internationale Arena.
The 124th National Horse Show and Family Festival runs from Wednesday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Center.
Lang and Sarah d'Auriol will be joined by their longeur, Nicole d'Auriol, and their horse Espoir Ardent. Lang is one of the most well-known and successful vaulters in recent history. His international career began in Saumur in the 1995 European Championships as part of the French team. Individually, Lang was the World Champion in 2000 and at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, in 2002. He finished as the silver medalist in World Championships in 1998 and 2004. He is also a two-time gold medalist at the European Championships and is a 16-time French champion. In 2003, Lang received the Price Bernard Destrenau Award from the French academy. Lang is now a physical therapist and vaulting coach and lives in Paris.
Lang trained Espoir Ardent, an 18 hand, 15-year-old Selle Francais gelding. Although "Espoir" was bred to be a jumper, he was "always a vaulting horse," said Nicole d'Auriol. Espoir competed in many CVI competitions and World Championships when he was owned by Lang. Espoir is now owned by the d'Auriols and lives in the United States.
Sarah d'Auriol began her vaulting career when she was just 8 years old. Born in Paris, d'Auriol now lives in Suffolk, VA. Now 15, she said that vaulting is her passion, and she first competed internationally in 2006. She has three top 10 finishes in international CVI events, and she participated in the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, last year. D'Auriol said her goal is to "be on the podium in 2010 at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky on her own horse."
Vaulting is a competitive discipline where both dynamic and static gymnastic elements are combined and performed on a cantering horse. It requires outstanding physical condition from the vaulter, and a harmonious relationship with the horse is imperative if a display of strength, coordination, rhythm, suppleness and balance is to be achieved. Vaulting was recognized as an FEI discipline in 1983.
Vaulting exercises include artistic mounts and dismounts, shoulder stands and handstands on the horse, carrying or lifting another vaulter, kneeling and standing exercises. Judging is based on technique, form, difficulty, balance, security and consideration of the horse. Today, horse, lunger and vaulter are considered a competitive unit and the performance of each is reflected in the final score.
Don't miss your chance to see this exciting equestrian discipline, only at this year's National Horse Show.
