Veterinary Students Receive AAEP Foundation/ALSIC Scholarships

Eight veterinary students were recently selected to receive $2,500
scholarships from the American Live Stock Insurance Company (ALSIC) and the
AAEP Foundation. The scholarships are presented annually to fourth-year
veterinary students who plan to pursue a career in equine veterinary
practice.

The scholarship recipients are Chris Bell, Western College of Veterinary
Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan; Dale Brown, Kansas State
University College of Veterinary Medicine; Kelly Ann Butterworth, Cornell
University College of Veterinary Medicine; Mary Gochnauer, The Ohio State
University College of Veterinary Medicine; Lydia G. Hamilton, University of
Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine; Misty C. Jordan, Texas A & M
College of Veterinary Medicine; Maureen Kelleher, University of California -
Davis School of Veterinary Medicine; and Travis Tull, University of Georgia
College of Veterinary Medicine.

Veterinary students are nominated for the scholarships by their individual
schools with supporting references from AAEP members and clinical
instructors. In addition to academic excellence, recipients are evaluated on
leadership ability and involvement in activities that benefit the health and
welfare of the horse.

Based in Geneva, Ill., ALSIC is a licensed insurance carrier in all 50
states and is primarily involved in livestock mortality. Coverage also is
provided in other parts of the world with special emphasis on Australia and
South Africa. ALSIC is the proud recipient of the A+ (Superior) rating from
the independent analyst, A.M. Best & Company.

Established in 1994, the non-profit AAEP Foundation complements the mission
of the American Association of Equine Practitioners through its support of
research, education, benevolence and the equine community. In 2005, more
than $220,000 was raised by the Foundation to support funding for
educational summits, scholarships and emergency needs, as well as other
endeavors.
