Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center Concludes Successful Summer Camp Sessions

Loxahatchee, FL- July 2, 2009 - The Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center (VTRC) has recently complete three successful summer camp sessions at their beautiful Palm Beach County facility. The camp ran from June 9 - 26 and each session lasted one week. The sessions included six to seven riders, including those diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, ADD, Aspergers, Autism and Depression.

During the camp sessions riders had the opportunity to tack, ride and care for their horses, which taught the riders about responsibility and work ethic. In addition to riding, campers also learned how horses communicate, how to care for injured horses, the roles of horses throughout history, and even how to give a horse a relaxing massage.

Each day's session began with a horse related craft while the campers arrived. When this task was completed the campers then had the opportunity to tack up their horses and ride. Each day focused on a different riding skill such as steering though an obstacle course, making 20 ft circles, vaulting moves, and pole bending. After the campers were done riding they untacked their horses and cleaned their tack. Following a lunch break the campers had lessons in the classroom about caring for the horses, and the day ended with another horse related craft.

"We had a wonderful time during camp," said VTRC Instructor Hannah Lopez. "It was so rewarding to watch each camper's confidence and horse knowledge grow everyday, and I loved watching the friendships blossom. One of the struggles that many people with disabilities face is socially feeling like they fit in socially, but it never failed, that at end of the week campers were exchanging phone numbers and making plans to hang out outside of camp."

The VTRC's summer camp also included their Teen Volunteer Program. Each day 20-30 volunteers help with barn work, office work, and horse care. This is an opportunity for area teenagers to give back to the community and learn about therapeutic riding and horse care.

The VTRC's next exciting event will be "Girls' Night Out" at Bank United on July 21 from 5:30-7pm. All proceeds will benefit VTRC with a $5 minimum donation. Business that will be attending this event include Polo Jewelry, Christy's Bakery, Mary Kay Cosmetics, The Puzzling Piece, Dean Anthony's Pizza, and many others.

The VTRC is a nonprofit organization based in Loxahatchee, FL, that provides recreational and therapeutic riding instruction to people of all ages with varying developmental, physical, and psychological disabilities. The organization, founded in 1982, assists more than 350 adults and children every year, helping them gain a sense of accomplishment, greater independence, and a higher quality of life. The VTRC has received a "Premier Accreditation" rating from the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
