The Virginia Equine Extravaganza® Announces “The East Coast Trainer Challenge

Richmond, VA, March 13, 2006: Heating up competition in the training arena, The Virginia Equine Extravaganza® announced today its plans to introduce the East Coast Trainer Challenge at this year’s Virginia Equine Extravaganza®, to be held at the Richmond Raceway Complex, Richmond, VA, October 27-29, 2006. This addition to the Equine Extravaganza’s® already robust schedule will take the excitement quotient to a new level. Selected trainers will be given a young, green horse to work with over the course of the weekend. Three trainers will be selected for the competition. Each trainer will work with their virtually untouched horse as they prepare their new equine partner to accept a saddle and rider. Clinicians will be judged on their ability to gentle these young horses and on how far they come within the allotted time. Although the horses will be as homogenous as possible (age, breed, previous handling) when the competition begins, the judges will take into account the unique differences between each horse as they evaluate and measure success. On Sunday the final showdown will give the trainers a chance to demonstrate how far they’ve come with their horse. The weekend will culminate when the trainers’ efforts are judged and the winner is selected.

“There are so many excellent trainers throughout the country,” said Virginia Equine Extravaganza® president Vicki O'Hara. “They are all faced with the challenge of getting their name out there, while horse enthusiasts are challenged with finding the trainer whose style and personality meets their needs. The East Coast Trainer Challenge has value for both trainers and the horse community. It gives our attendees a chance to see how different training styles accomplish similar results while giving the trainers a chance to show their stuff, involving the crowd in the process. Attendees get charged up as they choose and root for their favorite trainer. It’s exciting and a real crowd pleaser.”

The details of the competition and the selection process will be released in April.
