WEF Hunter Week: Ken Berkley & Sambalino Green Conformation Hunter Winners

WELLINGTON, Fla., Feb 20--Ken Berkely and Sambalino started Hunter week with a blue ribbon in the Green Conformation Hunters Wednesday at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

It was an exciting class for some horses as they experienced for the first time the rebuilt International Arena with its all-weather surface which will also be the venue for the AHJF Classic Spectacular Saturday night.

The division Wednesday consisted of two classes over fences and an under saddle. Two over fences classes and the pinning of champion and reserve will be Thursday.

The blue ribbon in the first class with the high score of 87 went to the six-year-old chestnut gelding, Sambalino owned by Gina Day from Boulder, Colo. and ridden by Berkley of Flemington, N.J. Sambalino has been with him for two years and was WEF circuit champion in the Pre Green Hunter division in 2007.

"I knew he would go well," Berkely said. "He is unflappable as far as his surroundings, which is to my advantage because most horses seize up in that ring. He went beautifully, he has a huge stride so he just walks the lines. This horse naturally has a beautiful jump and a great mind and he is so willing to please."

Havens Schatt and Quintin caught the judges' approval Wednesdayl with a second place finish in the first trip and the blue ribbon in the second trip and the Under Saddle. Havens of Ocala, Fla. and the six-year-old chestnut gelding, Quintin, under the new ownership of Elise Oken from Charlotte, N.C. had a score of 85 in the first round and came back to finish with the high score of 86 for the second round.

"He was so brave for being only six," Havens said. "He's never been in a ring like that so I didn't know what to expect but he handled it great."

Second place horse for the second trip was the seven-year-old chestnut gelding, Steal The Show, owned by Jennifer Rubio of Wellington and ridden by Jenny Fischer of Montgomery, N.Y. The pair moved into second in the conformation judging with a score of 84.1.
