Popeye K Wins Third Tricolor of Circuit at WEF

Holly Orlando Takes Two Division Reserve Championships

Wellington, FL – February 15, 2007 – A drastic change in weather greeted hunter riders today as competition resumed in the Mogavero Arena and several championships were pinned in the professional divisions.

Starting the morning off in the Regular Conformation division was Tommy Serio and Popeye K, who has been champion in the division every week. The 10-year-old bay stallion, is on a roll and won the model, the hack and one over fences class on Wednesday, and was second in another over fences class. Reserve champion in the Regular Conformation division went to Holly Orlando and Highland Park.

In the Regular Working Hunter division sponsored by Farnam Companies, Inc., it was Erynn Ballard and Cabardino who took the tricolor. Although Ballard is usually seen in the jumper ring, she and the 8-year-old bay stallion, owned by W. Charlot Farms Ltd., who also owns Rio Grande, impressed the judges. Ballard noted that they purchased the horse at age 5 and did the 6-year-old jumper classes on him in Canada, but upon request of the owner, did one week of hunter classes in Ocala. Lo and behold, the pair raked in the ribbons and has continued to do so since.

“He came here last year and did a few shows, but he was still kind of ‘jumpery,’” she explained. “He was champion at almost every show last year, and this is his first time out this year. He’s so pretty and he’s such a good jumper.” Reserve champion in the Regular Working division was Holly Orlando riding Touchstone.

In the Second Year Green Hunter Division, it was Stephen Heinecke and Alise Oken’s Alisette who brought home the championship. The 9-year-old Danish Warmblood mare is Oken’s mount in the Small Junior Hunter divisions, and they train with Robbie Hunt. Hunt noted that the mare earned great ribbons during the first two weeks of showing and “came out like a star yesterday.”

“She was first and second over jumps with an 88 and an 86, and she won the hack (on Wednesday). Today she was sixth in the second class. We purchased her in August of last year, and she has a great attitude and does anything we ask. She’s ‘Miss Whatever.!’” Hunt commented. Reserve champions were Ken Smith and Cosmo.

In the Green Conformation Hunter division, sponsored by Equestrian Properties, Scott Stewart swept the top two spots with Westpoint and Trousseau, respectively. The chestnut Bavarian stallion Westpoint repeated his championship performance from the first week, and Stewart noted that he was Pre Green Hunter circuit champion at the Winter Equestrian Festival last year. The pair won the model, a fences class and the hack on Wednesday, in addition to a second place over fences, and on Thursday, were second over fences.

Trousseau won both over fences classes on Thursday, and although he’s only six years old, Stewart said that because he’s such a good jumper, the classes are relatively easy for him. On Wednesday, the pair took third in the model and a third and a fourth over fences.

Friday’s hunter competition will begin with the Over 35 Amateur-Owner Hunter divisions in the Mogavero Arena at 8:00 a.m., and the 18-35 Amateur-Owner Hunter divisions will be concluded with championships pinned. In addition, the children’s and the junior hunter divisions will begin.
