West Coast Active Riders Congratulates Their 2005 Spruce Meadows Prix de Nations Teams
Equestrian News Release
San Diego, CA- July 28- The West Coast Active Riders (WCAR) organization recently brought four teams to compete in the 2005 Paramount Resources Prix de Nations at Spruce Meadows’ North American tournament in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 5, 2005.
The 1.10m team consisted of Richard Neal, Pam Buie, Troy Christiansen, and Aimee Primm, while the 1.20m team had Gretchen Privett, Richard Neal, Rachel Kummer, and Kathryn Burdett. The 1.30 team was comprised of Julie Hancock, Crystal Hickey, Erica Buie, and Stephanie Saperstein, while Hannah Selleck, Tammy Chipko, Tiffany Hickey, and Kelly Connor were on the 1.40m team. The Chefs d’Equipe were Richard Padilla, Morley Abey, and Eva Gonda.
“WCAR would like to offer our personal congratulations to all of our 2005 WCAR Spruce Meadows team members. For your effort, your determination, and your spirit in the face of a day of truly challenging competition, we congratulate you on the experience that you derived from your Nations’ Cup rides. Events like the Spruce Meadows Prix de Nations offer you, our next generation of Olympic riders, the opportunity to practice skills that will earn our country’s future medals and championships,” stated WCAR executive director, Gabriella Salick.
The Prix de Nations is unique for junior and amateur riders, as it uses a Nations’ Cup format like those found at International Championship events, such as the Pan American Games, World Equestrian Games, and the Olympics. These riders were able to practice at a top-level competition facility at Spruce Meadows over courses designed by the renowned Leopoldo Palacios.
The riders rode over a challenging course at the maximum height allowed for their level. After the first round, the lowest score was dropped and the top four teams returned for a second round over the same course, under the same format.
Although the WCAR teams had some trouble with the courses in the event, it was an overall wonderful experience for all of the riders. Salick noted, “We were all extremely impressed by the high level of team spirit, humor, and friendship that made our challenging day into the top-notch learning opportunity that it was. Cheers to everyone who responded to difficulty with the will to practice, learn, and improve.”
Thanks from the WCAR also go to the Southern Family and Paramount Resources for making the Prix de Nations opportunity available for their riders, and to Ariat, who provided beautiful hunt coats for all of the team members.
In other WCAR news, congratulations also go out to WCAR members who competed at Spruce Meadows, including Rich Fellers, who rode McGuiness to eighth place in the 2005 Atco Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup, and Guillermo Obligado, who finished in eleventh place with Carlson in the prestigious event. On Sunday at the North American tournament, Richard Spooner piloted Hilton Flight and Robinson to fourth and eighth place finishes in the Chrysler Classic, and Hap Hansen rode His Horse to tenth place in the grueling derby. Twelfth place in the Chrysler Classic went to WCAR President Will Simpson and El Campeon’s Boxter.
