Whitney Petersen & Prosecco 24 Win Final National Children's Medal at WEF

WELLINGTON, Fla., Apr. 4--Whitney Petersen and Prosecco 24 won the final National Children's Medal of the CN Winter Equestrian presented by Zimmerman Advertising at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center Friday.

Of the four riders called back to test, Petersen held her first place position to the end. The test consisted of trotting fence 6, canter 4 and 5 ( a two stride), hand gallop fence 7, halt, sit trot to the gate, and walk out.

Petersen, 17, of Boynton Beach, Fla. and the 11-year-old bay gelding owned by Kristen Chionchio of Long Island, N.Y. have participated in most of the major equitation classes during the 12 weeks of WEF. The pair train with Jennifer Drahan of Wellington.

"I thought the test was straightforward and fun," Whitney said. "It was nice to have the two stride in the test and the hand gallop was my favorite."

Whitney set her goals for this year to compete in the equitation finals at Capital Challenge and the Low Junior Jumpers in college.

The red ribbon was awarded to Madeline Toulas, 15, of Delray Beach, Fla. and her seven-year-old chestnut mare, Calinka. Toulas rides with trainer Geoff Teal of Wellington. The beginning of WEF was the beginning of Calinka's equitation career, coming from the jumper ring in Europe.

"I thought I rode well today but I think I can ride better," Madeline said. "My horse went well. Three foot is easy for her. She was a jumper so equitation is new to her."

The third place went to Mary Margaret Korn, 13, of Ohio and the 12-year-old bay gelding, Greenwich Avenue, owned by Rachel Degabrielle of Jupiter, Fla. They are trained by Tim Goguen of Lexington, Ky.

Fourth place was won by Olivia Lopez-Balboa, 14, of New York, and her 10-year-old chestnut gelding, Okidoki. Balboa and Okidoki ride with trainer Laura Bowery of Bridgehampton, N.Y. The pair are new to equitation and uses the classes to prepare for children's hunters.

"This is the first test I've ever done," Olivia said. "I usually use the equitation to get ready for the hunters. I thought my test was good except for the double but that is something I've been working on."
