Will Simpson Successful at Hagen Jumping Isabell Werth & Satchmo Dominate Dressage

HAGEN, Germany, April 27--The USA's Will Simpson posted victories on two different horses at the Performance Sales International "Horses & Dreams Meets America" competition that finished Sunday.

He was one of a handful of Americans among the lineup of international riders in four days of jumping and dressage during which the Beach Boys were the featured entertainers at the annual competition with an international theme.

In the dressage arena, Germany's Isabell Werth and Satchmo left no doubt of their superiority taking both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special while her compatriots battled for the rest of the ribbons against a bevy of entries that included three Americans.

Will Simpson and Nicole Shahinian Simpson, both of Thousand Oaks, Calif. competed in Hagen while in Europe as riders on the U.S. Olympic jumping short list that was determined during the selection trials at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Fla. in March.

The show was also an outing for Will Simpson's Carlsson vom Dach and for Nicole's SRF Dragonfly, their short listed mounts.

Will Simpson, 38, posted victory on Narina VI in a speed class on the first of four days of international competition. Germany's Franke Sloothaak on Al Faras Riamo was second with Denis Lynch of Ireland on Usilon d'Ocquier third.

In another speed class on opening day, Will Simpson and El Campeon's Tosca finished second behind Ariana Azcarrage of Mexico on Jumex Sport Qredo. Nicole Simpson was 12th on her Tomorrow.

Will Simpson on Tosca went double clear to take first place prize money of $8,000 in the 1.50-meter Bankhaus Lampe on Saturday, while Nicole Simpson on Dragonfly was 27th.

In the Beresa speed class, Nicole, 34, on her Dragonfly finished 10th out of 73 starters. Will Simpson and Carlsson vom Dach were 28th.

The Landkreis Osnabrück und Gemeinde Hagen Grand Prix was won by Germany's Otto Becker on ECL Lunatic with Switzerland's Christina Liebherr on L.B. No Mercy second in the field of 67 starters for the two-round competition.

Will on Carlsson vom Dach and Nicole and Dragonfly placed 36th and 42nd, respectively, each with eight faults.

In the dressage Grand Prix, Isabell Werth and Satchmo won with a score of 75.250 percent and compatriot Nadine Capellmann on Elvis Va second with 73.583 percent.

The USA's Heather Blitz, who is based in Denmark, and Otto placed 10th with 67.125 percent, George Williams of Richwood, Ohio and Rocher 15th with 65.250 percent and Jane Hannigan of Harvard, Mass. and Maksimyllian 18th with 64.042 percent.

The Grand Prix Special was won by Werth and Satchmo with 79.120 percent and Matthias Alexander Rath on Sterntaler-Unicef 2nd with 73.500 percent.

Williams and Rocher were 14th with 66.240 percent while Blitz and Otto finished 15th with 64.560 percent.
