Zone 10 is Silver in Prix des States

Mavis Spencer in Second Individually

Burbank, CA. Zone 4 proved unbeatable on Friday night at the Pennsylvania National in the Prix des States Junior Jumper Championship. They got off to a commanding lead with a zero fault score for the first round. Juliana Fisher’s 12 faults served as the drop score. Zone 10 had a tougher time finding their groove. Karl Cook, Sophie Benjamin, and Mavis Spencer all posted four faults, and Spencer almost had a clear round but a rail at the last fence gave her four faults. Saer Coulter provided the drop score of eight for that round.

In the second round the Zone 10 riders rallied, undoubtedly boosted by the wild cheering of their fellow Californians in the stands. Team night at Harrisburg can be quite enthusiastic. Zone 4 kept up their strong performances and finished on a score of four faults from Reed Kessler. Knowing they could not win gold, Zone 10 fought for the silver medal, and Cook, Coulter and Spencer all posted fault free rounds. Zone 10 finished as silver medalists with a final score of 12. Bronze went to Zone 2 with a total score of 20. Seven teams from throughout the United States competed in the competition.

Tomorrow night is the individual championship. After winning the Welcome Stake, Mavis Spencer is in second overall. Her strong performances in the two rounds of the team competition place her less than two points behind Zone 4's Taylor Land. Sophie Benjamin is in seventh and Saer Coulter is in tenth. Strong performances by both those riders could see them in medal contention.

Benjamin is fresh off her win of the USEF Platinum Performance Talent Search Finals East where she is the first West Coast rider to win the East Coast finals in recent history. She decided to the compete in the eastern finals as she is attending college in the east and her horse shipped east the end of summer for the other national equitation championships.

On Sunday the West’s best equitation riders will compete in the USEF Hunter Seat Medal Finals and LEG Up News will bring you news and results from that competition, as well as highlights from the Hunter division. For complete results, visit: http://www.panational.org.
