Zoo in Forest Park and Massachusetts Horse Magazine Partner to Present Third Annual “Equine Week at the Zoo,” April 15-23
Equestrian News Release
Springfield, Massachusetts, January 31, 2006—The Zoo in Forest Park and Education Center and Massachusetts Horse magazine will partner for a third consecutive year to ensure that the popular Springfield family attraction gallops to a great spring grand opening with “Equine Week at the Zoo,” April 15-23, featuring nine full days of equine breeds and horsemanship demonstrations.
“The idea is to have folks learn the great variety in horse and pony breeds, and see them in action. We have jumping, long-lining, fashion shows, harnessing, parades, and braiding,” said Director of Education and Volunteer Services, Nancy Condon. “We will show the many ways people and horses interact. When not in the ring, our guest horses will be in pens near our exhibit tent, so visitors can stop and ask owners and trainers about their horse or pony, and read the signage we will supply teaching about each breed.”
“There will be some wonderful new breeds,” said Massachusetts Horse publisher, Stephanie Sanders-Ferris, of Goshen, “such as a rare Exmoor Pony stallion on April 22, and new riding demonstrations, by DD Performance Horses of Feeding Hills. We’re not surprised to see this event grow. Our horse community is thriving.” Massachusetts Horse magazine, now in its fifth year, serves central and western Massachusetts with equestrian news and events, and hosts a benefit horse show each October. Profits this year will go to the Bay State Equine Rescue of Oakham.
Equine Week’s returning favorites will include the colorful Paints and pintos of Chestnut Hill Farm in North Windham, CT, and trainer Jonathan Blake. Blake was 18 when he got his first Paint horse in 1976; he has trained Paint and pinto show horses since 1990. “Colored, spotted, painted, whatever you call them, pintos and Paints are not just cow ponies. They are three-day horses, fine harness horses, reiners, trail horses, and beloved family pets.”
The exceptional diversity of the horse is what Equine Week at the Zoo in Forest Park, in partnership with Massachusetts Horse magazine, plans to celebrate. Come one day or come all — each day will offer a different schedule of breeds and demonstrations.
