Zone 10 Young Riders Sweep Individual Medals
With two team gold medals to their credit, Zone 10 clinched the individual gold medals and a few more. Lucy Davis went into the final two rounds of the NAJYRC Individual Junior Championship with a two rail lead, but it proved unnecessary. Zone 10 is Silver in Prix des States
Zone 4 proved unbeatable on Friday night at the Pennsylvania National in the Prix des States Junior Jumper Championship. They got off to a commanding lead with a zero fault score for the first round. Juliana Fisher’s 12 faults served as the drop score. Zone 10 had a tougher time finding their groove. Karl Cook, Sophie Benjamin, and Mavis Spencer all posted four faults, and Spencer almost had a clear round but a rail at the last fence gave her four faults. Zone 10 is Double Gold!
Team Day at Young Riders is long and stressful, yet exciting. Not only do the horses and riders have to jump a difficult, long championship course, they have to do it twice. For many riders this is their first opportunity to experience the pressures and rewards of riding on a team, and the Zone 10 kids, sponsored by Great American Insurance looked like pros.
The Juniors led off first thing in the morning, and the water jump proved to be the biggest challenge. Course Designer Olaf Petersen, Jr. not only provided a related distance, he did not intend to make the distance tricky. "The juniors need more practice riding water," said Petersen. "Even with a related distance they had a difficult time." The rest of the course proved challenging as well and it wasn’t until the 31st rider (out of 33) that anyone saw a clean round. Zone 10's Lucy Davis executed a smooth, efficient ride aboard Mister Mind and posted the first zero on the scoreboard. ...

Michigan Conservancy Wins $10,000 Breyer-ELCR Grant
“Every time we turn our backs, we lose land to development,” says Sharon Greene of the Highland Conservancy. Her group, based in southeastern Michigan, is the 2008 winner of Breyer Animal Creation’s Equestrian Land Preservation grant, awarded through the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource (ELCR), Lexington, Ky. Highland Conservancy will use the $10,000 grant to purchase land that connects a road in neighboring Rose Township to Highland Oaks Park, a popular park for local trail riders. This purchase will help preserve land and an equestrian way of life in an area, like so many, that is struggling with encroaching development. ...
