Winter’s cooler temperatures often bring an appreciated relief from flies to horse owners, particularly in the northeast and midwest regions of the country. Incidentally with this relief, fly prevention tends to fall lower on horse owners concern list until it’s again a problem. Flies are a nuisance all year round, spreading diseases such as West Nile Virus, Pigeon Fever and Equine Infectious Anemia to horses. Recently veterinarians, particularly in the western states, have reported a surge in cases of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, also known as pigeon fever or dryland distemper.
